A cocktail can be based on tradition and “Abuelos” in Perea is a spot that proves it. Having created a place based on “eternal love” as they say – and dedicated to grandfather and grandmother, as its name means in Spanish – they try to combine tradition and new cocktail techniques daily and create, with their knowledge, a broader future for the catering industry, inextricably intertwined with traditional elements.

“Abuelos” in Perea, opened in 2020 and was the first brunch spot in the area. The name, which in Spanish means “grandparents”, was not chosen by chance, but in honor of the owners’ grandparents, who live right above, in the space where the owners themselves, four cousins, grew up, who share, through this particular space, the purest emotions that their memories have created – moments, smells, games, smiles, safety, selflessness and… eternal love.

Their basic philosophy is to highlight the concept of hospitality in the catering industry, just as they themselves learned it from their grandparents, who took care of them on every visit. They achieve this by utilizing the knowledge they have from their studies on the subject (coffee, spirits and wines).

Specialty coffee and rich brunch

Coffee at “Abuelos” is a specialty, however, there is also cold brew coffee, which comes from a 12-hour distillation and which you can try in any form.

Brunch, its strong point, comes to be the best entrance to your day, along with your coffee.

Eggs Benedict, omelets with vegetables or cold cuts, croque Madame, poached eggs with rustic bread, savory and sweet pancakes, brioche in various flavors, are among the many options on the brunch menu.

There are also many flavors in herbal teas, organic and not, particularly refreshing on hot summer days, as are fresh juices.

All day dining experience

Immediately after, you will find the main dishes, as well as fingerfood and platters for beer, wine and other accompaniments, in an all day dining experience, which will cover you at any time of the day.

Falafel, fajitas with all kinds of meat and vegetables and imaginative bruschettas, healthy bowls, smoothies and whatever else you desire during the day, are at your disposal.

If you are a larger group, choose between finger foods and dishes that are … shared, such as chicken, shrimp tembura accompanied by sauce, club sandwiches and of course the varieties with sausages, cold cuts and cheeses and burgers, of which the burger with the ewe burger is worth trying.

You will also find remarkable sweets, such as chocolate fontant, to close each of your meals in the most delicious way.

Specializing in cocktails

As the day progresses, the specialty of “Abuelos”, the cocktails – for which they have been distinguished, so far, in two national competitions – begin to make their appearance. The work and attention that has been given to this particular part is great and evident in the new list, which is being released these days.

Even in cocktail techniques, the owners, as lovers of traditions, try to make the connection. Hence this year’s theme of the signature list, which, entitled “A Weekend at Grandpa and Grandma’s”, completes the trilogy “Ode to Eternity”, which they have been curating for the last three summers (ed. last year’s list included cocktails inspired by the cartoon series they watched as children). Like them, you too will be able to return to your grandparents’ house for a weekend to relive sweet memories.

Over 200 spirits

Trademark of “Abuelos”, the Negroni. Packaged in an antique bottle – reminiscent of a pharmacy bottle that you can take with you – it intrigues you to at least try it, genre fanatics or not. The cellar is endless, since in the spirits you will find more than 200 labels, probably the most in a store cellar in the whole of eastern Thessaloniki, many of which are rare and collectible – after all, the owners themselves are collectors of rare flavors and make sure to offer them in their space.

The events…

Every week, DJ sets are held by the “Abuelos” team, while in the winter you will also find various types of events in the indoor space, which is ideal for tastings, etc. A typical pairing event is the tasting of the winter menu, with wines from the Gerovassiliou Estate, for which a Michelin-starred Chef from Athens was hosted. Through the store’s blog, you can be informed daily about what’s new “coming” to the store, which organizes truly innovative events, while through their website, you can also listen to the store’s list on “Spotify”.

… and the grandparents!

On each of your visits, the approximately 30-person team of “Abuelos” will do their best to ensure you have an enjoyable stay at the place.

You will meet a lot of people from Thessaloniki, as well as tourists and other visitors to the area. And if you want to meet the … grandparents, all you have to do is look up, to the balcony of the floor. They will be there, showing off!

Tip 1: “Abuelos” is open daily, from 9:00 to 03:00.
