The story of “Domino’s Pizza,” which we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying in Thessaloniki for years now, began decades ago—on a different continent entirely! It was in the 1960s in the United States when two brothers opened the first store with a mission to create pizzas known for their exceptional quality and ability to reach customers tasting like they just came out of the oven.
Since then, Domino’s has evolved into one of the largest pizza brands in the world, with over 20,000 stores in 90 countries. One taste, and you’ll instantly understand why!
How it came to Thessaloniki
The Domino’s story in Thessaloniki was made possible thanks to Elio Oikonomidis. He discovered Domino’s in the United Kingdom, was captivated by the product, and decided to bring it to Greece.
“I didn’t just want to open a store; I wanted to open up a whole new market,” he says, referring to a pizza that truly stands out—thanks to the brand’s core philosophy: quality and standards that ensure each slice reaches the customer as if it just came out of the oven.
The first steps in Thessaloniki
The first Domino’s store opened in 2010 on Vasilissis Olgas Street. A few years later, in 2015, a location opened in Mediterranean Cosmos Mall, followed in 2017 by the store on Dimitriou Gounari Street, in the city center.
Today, these two stores continue to faithfully serve a large portion of the city, with the mall location remaining a go-to spot for pizza on the go.
What sets Domino’s apart is, above all, the dough.
In Thessaloniki, at the main store on Vasilissis Olgas, there’s a dedicated dough-making facility where trained staff prepare fresh dough daily. The dough undergoes a 24-hour fermentation process according to Domino’s strict international standards—giving it that unique flavor and texture that make it special.
From production straight to your table, fresh and flavorful.
So, every pizza that arrives at your table or doorstep starts its journey right in the city itself.
“The quality of the dough and carefully selected ingredients are the foundations of Domino’s,” says Elio Oikonomidis, who has been trained by the company to fully understand store operations and management.
Innovation that made a difference
The public response in Thessaloniki was immediate. In a city full of pizzerias and fierce competition, Domino’s won over a loyal customer base with consistency, innovation, and freshness.
A standout example is the Mediterranean Cosmos location—the first Domino’s store in Greece to open inside a shopping mall. This was a pioneering move initiated by Franchisee of Northern Greece, Elio Oikonomidis, and it sparked a trend that led Domino’s to open similar locations across the country.
It’s also worth noting that the Thessaloniki stores were industry leaders during the pandemic period. They were the first to introduce contactless delivery, showing that adapting to market needs is key to lasting success.
Fluffy, Flavorful, and Light Pizza
As for the menu?
The Pepperoni pizza remains the top choice—often described by customers as the best on the market. Meanwhile, the classic Margherita sets the standard for pizza quality: minimal ingredients, clean flavors, and a perfect result.
But the variety doesn’t stop there!
From vegan options to pizzas with stuffed crust, every customer can create their favorite combination by choosing from different dough types, toppings, and flavors.
When it comes to dough, there are four options:
• Traditional Dough
• Thin Dough (also known as Italian)
• Fluffy Dough (also known as Pan)
• Thin & Extra Crispy Dough (known as Thin Crust)
We tried the Parmesana – Philadelphia, and it was a delight: fluffy, flavorful to the very last bite, surprisingly light, and just as enjoyable the next day.
It’s a perfect example of how Domino’s has combined international know-how with Greek consumer tastes, even making unfamiliar flavors feel pleasantly surprising!
On the pasta side, you’ll find only penne, in a variety of flavors. And of course, there are the signature chicken wings and Domino’s fresh salads.
And we certainly can’t forget dessert!
The Choco Pie with Nutella, made with authentic French puff pastry and rich hazelnut praline, is a sweet temptation that perfectly complements every meal. Whether warm or cold, dusted with powdered sugar, it’s an ideal treat to follow your savory selection.
A memorable experience that lasts
Fifteen years later, Domino’s Pizza in Thessaloniki continues with the same passion—delivering daily quality, innovation, and unforgettable taste.
For those who’ve tried it, it’s more than just food—it’s a standout experience.
You’ll recognize the stores by the iconic red and blue logo and the unmistakable domino tile symbol. Step inside, take in the aroma, choose your flavors and your dough, and enjoy a truly unique pizza experience you’ll remember for a long time.
Tip 1: Domino’s is considered the “king of delivery”—the only pizza that can travel without losing its texture and flavor. See for yourself by ordering through E-food or Wolt.
Tip 2: The stores at Dimitriou Gounari and Vasilissis Olgas are open daily, Monday through Sunday, from 12:30 PM to 12:30 AM.
At the Dimitriou Gounari location, you can dine in, while the Vasilissis Olgas store operates exclusively via take-away and delivery.
