With an enriched program and renewed space, “Mikri Skini” begins this season, on 14 Eptalofou Street, in Toumba. The space has begun its activities and in addition to musical and theatrical performances, you will now find various educational activities, such as theater and music workshops, infrastructure for more recordings, tape recordings and video recordings and a high-fidelity sound system, which offers a “studio” level experience. Finally, in its anteroom – courtyard area, you will now find a small cafe, to enjoy your coffee in collaboration with “Coffee Republic”, to relax, talk to people and use it as a waiting area.
“Mikri Skini” opened for the first time in February 2020, as a cultural space, against the difficulties of the time and in a building whose history begins in 1926 when the first refugees who settled in Toumba created their own space to accommodate their artistic concerns, building the first theater in Thessaloniki. In modern history, the space was home to “Agrotikon”, Nikos Papazoglou’s studio, a meeting point for many bands and recording sessions by artists of the time, some of whom continue to work today.
The “Mikri Skini” team is directly connected to the artistic scene, since its members are music and theater professionals and have come to introduce us to its own culture, a more refined way of entertainment, where personal creation is highlighted in every way.
Concerts and theatrical performances
A stage for live theatrical performances, concerts, book presentations, school performances and other cultural events, “Mikri Skini” has already found a great response, as a result of which it has been organizing educational seminars for musicians and actors or theater workshops for children and adolescents for some time, thus offering a complete multi-purpose venue for Art and Culture, which always remains open to new collaborations.
A look at the social media of “Mikri Skini” will fully inform you about the current and upcoming program of events, which this year include daily live performances by representatives of the jazz, traditional, folk, but also latin, swing or rock ‘n roll music scene of Thessaloniki, as well as classical and experimental adult theater performances, by theater groups inside and outside the city. Special, selected theatrical performances are organized for young children.
Theater in particular has now become dynamically established at “Mikri Skini”. In collaboration with actor and director Thomas Velissaris, the theater group’s lessons continue this year, with the first theatrical play for children, “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde, already being performed every Sunday at 12:00 (reservations for schools are possible). At the same time, the performance “The Park” is being prepared, a moving play for all ages, which will be performed in November and December, while during the same period, the “Marmita” puppet theater will stage adult puppet shows.
In terms of music, every Saturday you can enjoy an excellent musical performance with Andreas Karakotas, directed by Thomas Velissaris and in collaboration with the University of Macedonia Orchestra, with a program of folk and sophisticated pop songs.
The artistic seminars
At the same time, educational artistic seminars for children, teenagers and adults, concerning theater and visual arts, continue. Every afternoon, the theater department for teenagers operates and every Thursday, from 9:00 PM to 9:30 PM, the theater group for adults over 50 years of age will operate.
Every Sunday, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, a rhythmology workshop for adults (suitable for musicians, actors and other artists) will operate at “Mikri Skini”, entitled “The Harmony of Rhythm” and taught by Kostas Anastasiadis. The latter was born in Thessaloniki, grew up in Kilkis and began playing drums at the age of 13, participating, as a self-taught musician, in local bands of the time and starting his professional career in 1986. During his musical studies in America, he discovered the “Rhythm Cycles” method, which was recognized by high-level musicians, while he himself received the praise of “Unique Special Stylist”. All these years he has been organizing seminars and participating in numerous live performances with well-known artists, both abroad and in Greece, where he continues to research the tradition and evolution of music, creating an alloy of sounds and moods.
Upgraded sound experience
The dreams of the people of the “Mikri Skini” multi-venue include hosting music and theater festivals, always oriented towards artistic quality, so that more and more young artists can present their work. The fact that Nikos Papazoglou’s studio operated in the space has bequeathed the necessary studio specifications for the sound and environment.
Recently, the space was upgraded in terms of infrastructure for recordings, tape recordings and videotaping of band appearances or performances, with a high-fidelity sound system, which now offers a “studio” level sound experience.
Respecting the history of the space, they also want to create their own history, with respect for the passage of time, so that “Mikri Skini” becomes another cultural cell for Thessaloniki. Especially for the 100 years of operation of the building, which will be completed in 2026, the relevant events will begin to be announced soon.
Enjoying a drink with accompaniments
As a place of entertainment and enjoyment, “Mikri Skini” has its own cellar, which is fully updated with wine labels from the most famous producers in Greece. You will also find a wide variety of classic drinks and cocktails, as well as a cheese and cold cuts platter, to accompany each of your choices.
Each of your visits is, therefore, a complete experience of culture, socialization and entertainment and you will understand why “Mikri Skini” has already been loved by many residents of the city and beyond, both from the artistic scene and beyond!
