Since 1996, at number 106 of Mitropoleos Street, in the area where some of the most historic bars of Thessaloniki – such as “Ekkentron” or “Flou” – were still operating at that time, Bougatsa “Giannis” has been writing its own successful story. And what a story… Intertwined with nights out, with… after visits, when a bougatsa shop became the final stop after a night out and a place where friendships developed, even… marriages.
It was and is the friendly and cozy atmosphere of the bougatsa “Giannis” and its all-night schedule, which ensured its many years of progress and the appreciation of every “all-nighter” in the area and every other visitor. And of course its delicious bougatsa in every flavor, salty and sweet and especially the one with merenda, which first appeared here.
Bougatsa “Giannis”, is not by chance the most legendary of the city. Genuine, hand-made bougatsa, with flavors based on traditional recipes, with air-dough that is made daily, it has already been running for 27 years and thousands of people have passed through its premises. The important thing is that people form queues outside the store every day, waiting even 20′, to try the savory flavors – cheese, spinach and minced meat – or the sweet ones – the traditional and sought-after cream and the even more popular bougatsa with merenda, which they themselves have established, for several years.
In the most central part of the city
The Papadopoulou family, owner of the famous bougatsa shop, had, from the beginning, nothing to do with bougatsa. He just happened to buy this particular store and found out that bougatsa was missing from the area.
Initially, the owners were the parents, Aristotelis and Efstathia, together with their son Giannis, from whom the store took its name. Since 2000, his brother, George Papadopoulos, has been added to the team and today the business is managed exclusively by the two brothers, faithful to the original philosophy, which was quality, friendly and good service and relationship with people and the main thing: the appetite for work .
Delicious salty and sweet flavors
Today, in the place of the bougatsa “Giannis”, you will find delicious salty and sweet flavors, prepared by their master, but also some additional suggestions, which remain among the top choices of the public.
Try the traditional bougatsa with cream, powdered sugar and cinnamon, the special one with cream and Merenda coating, the salty one with cheese or minced beef (and whole strained yogurt if you wish), the bougatsa with spinach and accompany them with the necessary white or chocolate milk or coffee of your choice.
Try their peinirli, calzone, puff pastry, brioche with burger, caseri and caramelized onions, gyropita, but also fasting suggestions, such as the twisted quiche with mushrooms and tomato or the apple pie. Don’t miss the charcuterie souffle, which they are also famous for!
An “oasis” for evening entertainment
At “Giannis”, you will find traditional bougatsa from Thessaloniki, which has been successfully prepared every day for 27 years and this is also the best advertisement it can have! The Papadopoulos brothers are here every day, waiting for you, to offer you your favorite taste, in a space that has even been characterized as an “oasis” for evening entertainment. After all, how many bougatsa shops in Thessaloniki remain open seventeen hours straight?
Tip: The shop is open every day, from 20.00 to 15.00 the next day. If you want to avoid waiting in line, the best days to visit are from Tuesday to Thursday.
