In the heart of Thessaloniki, on the city’s renowned Athonos Square at 6 Vatikoti Street, Dia Tauta has been writing its own distinctive chapter in the city’s culinary scene since 2004. Striking a balance between familiar Greek flavours and contemporary creativity, the restaurant places fresh, seasonal ingredients, quality olive oil, beautifully crafted dishes and Greek wine at the heart of its philosophy. It welcomes every group into a warm and inviting setting where good food comes together with live music and the genuine pleasure of sharing a meal with friends.

A Story That Began in 1961

The story of Dia Tauta, however, goes back several decades earlier, to 1961, when Angelos Kyranas, father of the current co-owner, opened a butchers’ shop.

In 1971, the business became a greengrocer’s called I Skydra, remaining at the same address until 2000. It was then passed on to the next generation, with Alexandra Kyrana taking over its management. In April 2004, a new chapter began: Dia Tauta opened in the same premises, with a vision centred on quality food, Mediterranean cuisine and the use of outstanding ingredients.

Over the years, Miltos Kogios joined the company, while Dia Tauta expanded into the neighbouring premises at 2–4 Vatikoti Street. In this way, a family business story spanning decades continued under a new identity, now firmly focused on gastronomy.

Greek Cuisine with a Creative Twist

At Dia Tauta, Greek and Mediterranean cuisine provide the foundation, but tradition is never treated as something static. The menu is refreshed seasonally, approximately every six months, following the seasons and the availability of ingredients, with particular emphasis on freshness and traditional Greek produce such as olive oil and feta.

The menu features meat, seafood and fish, classic grilled dishes, as well as vegan and vegetarian options.

Familiar, comforting, home-style flavours sit alongside dishes with a more creative character. Highlights include crispy roasted aubergines, based on a family recipe from Serres; bruschetta topped with authentic Tzoumagia sausage and handmade Florina pepper paste; and the ever-popular feta sticks, wrapped in crisp filo pastry and finished with honey from the mountains of Macedonia.

New ideas are continually introduced, such as pork with leek presented in a more contemporary style. Another firm favourite is the handmade beef burger with aromatic butter and mashed potato, alongside flank steak with BBQ carrot purée and caramelised onion, while seafood lovers can opt for gnocchi with salmon and cream cheese.

The philosophy is clear: ingredients should be fresh, seasonal and carefully selected, with daily deliveries and ongoing quality checks. This allows every dish to develop its own distinctive character while remaining firmly rooted in Greek culinary traditions.

Dishes We Particularly Enjoyed

Among the highlights of the winter menu, the cheese arancini with Sicilian yellow tomato passata and smoked pepper chutney combine a crisp texture with rich cheesy flavours and sweet-and-sour, smoky notes.

The rocket salad with carrot and turnip tagliatelle, fennel and lemon confit offers a fresher, more aromatic combination, while the green salad with fig, hazelnut and pomegranate brings together contrasting textures and seasonal flavours.

For those who enjoy richer dishes, the spinach soufflé with cheeses is a warm and comforting choice. The Naxos arseniko saganaki with citrus marmalade and spiced syrup creates an intriguing contrast between the saltiness of the cheese and its sweet, spicy accents.

Among the dishes celebrating the flavours of the land is the orzo risotto with a trio of mushrooms. Meat lovers, meanwhile, can enjoy black pork chop with celeriac purée and king oyster mushrooms, combining robust flavours with earthy notes. The beef short rib with white risotto is another generous and satisfying option.

Wine as Part of the Dining Experience

The Dia Tauta experience is complemented by a wine list that is refreshed seasonally and features both Greek and international labels, spanning a variety of styles and price points. Choices include Amethystos and Ble Trakter, alongside wines such as Nykteri Santo, Konstantara Sauvignon Blanc and Crudo Catarratto Zibibbo from Sicily.

Northern Greek wines also have a special place, with labels such as Gerovassiliou Malagousia, Pavlidis Thema and SMX Alfa among the regular favourites. The restaurant’s connection with the world of wine is an ongoing part of its philosophy, with the team regularly visiting vineyards and wineries and keeping up to date with the latest developments and trends.

A Team with Years of Shared Experience

Behind the kitchen and service is a team defined by consistency and continuity. Working relationships spanning 10 years or more have helped create a welcoming environment where experience meets enthusiasm and genuine passion.

Staff training is an ongoing process, covering everything from hygiene and food safety to developments in gastronomy and wine. At Dia Tauta, knowledge and experience are considered just as important as the quality of the ingredients that go into a great dish.

Live Music Every Day

The restaurant is open daily from 12 noon until 00:30, with the experience enhanced by live music and much-loved Greek laïko and rebetiko songs.

From 20:00 every evening, the atmosphere becomes even more convivial, as live music accompanies the food and wine, creating the perfect setting for an evening shared with friends.

A Commitment to the Environment and Community

Dia Tauta’s long-standing presence in the centre of Thessaloniki is also accompanied by practical corporate social responsibility initiatives. Recycling plastic, paper, metal and electrical appliances, together with collecting used cooking oils for reuse in industrial production, forms part of the restaurant’s everyday operations.

From the butchers’ shop of 1961 and the I Skydra greengrocer’s to today’s Dia Tauta, the story on Vatikoti Street is one of family continuity, culinary evolution and people who have remained deeply and meaningfully connected to the business.

With Greek cuisine that respects tradition while embracing creativity, fresh seasonal ingredients, carefully selected wines, live music every evening and a team with many years of shared experience, Dia Tauta remains one of our favourite meeting places in the heart of Thessaloniki.
