Four decades ago, somewhere in Sweden, a Greek man learned and developed the craft of a distinctive kind of pizza—one you can now enjoy every day in Thessaloniki at Funghi Pizza & Pasta. Adapted to Greek tastes by its very creator, this pizza is now served in two locations in our city—Kamara and Stavroupoli—as well as in Chania, Crete. It has become a family tradition that continues to evolve while remaining true to its foundations, and it is also a rising franchise project that, having conquered the Thessaloniki market, is now receiving partnership proposals from all over Greece.

The original creator of this pizza was Babis Nikolaidis, and today the torch is carried on by his daughter Zana and her husband Apostolis Oikonomou—both now well known through social media. Coming from completely different professional backgrounds, they met through taste, life, collaboration, and a shared vision.

The first store opened in Stavroupoli in 2016, followed by the Kamara location in 2023. In the summer of 2025, the business expanded beyond Thessaloniki with its first out-of-town store in Chania, Crete. Franchise plans are very much active, and the owners’ invitation is open to anyone interested in joining the Funghi Pizza & Pasta team—which, judging by all signs, will continue to grow!

The uniqueness of Funghi pizza

The pizza here does not pretend to be Neapolitan, nor does it chase the trend of ultra-thin dough. As a pizza adapted to Greek preferences, it features a substantial dough with body, moisture, and character. It is baked directly on the stone of the oven—without a pan—and comes out crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, ideal for holding sauces, cheeses, mushrooms, or gyro, all perfectly bound together and irresistibly appetizing.

It’s a pizza that satisfies without feeling heavy. Perhaps that’s why customers often choose to pair it with a salad—the combination is not excessive at all, but rather a perfect, complete meal!

In the wide-ranging Funghi Pizza & Pasta menu, pizza remains the star. You’ll find it in three sizes (with the largest reaching 48 cm), in classic options like Margherita and Pepperoni, Barbecue, and Pesto for richer flavors, as well as more “Greek-style” signatures: pizza with pork or chicken gyro, chicken à la crème, and even the extremely popular pitsogyro (gyro wrapped in pita).

In the pasta section, be sure to try the Tartufo with fresh mushrooms, truffle paste, and truffle oil; the shrimp pasta; baked Funghi pasta; à la crème with mushrooms or prosciutto; and the mouthwatering tortellini with ham and cream. Of course, you’ll also find Mediterranean pasta, the classic Napoliten, and the simple yet always delicious comfort-food pasta with kefalotyri cheese.

When it comes to salads, Greek and Italian flavors, tuna salad, mushroom salad, orange salad, and many other refreshing options perfectly complement your meal. Worth trying as well are the risottos, savory and sweet calzones—such as the calzone with Merenda, which customers describe as “sinful!”—as well as clearly vegetarian and vegan options included in every menu category, always with authentic flavors and no compromises.

The menu will also fully satisfy younger guests, who can enjoy delicious chicken bites, pasta dishes, and pizzas designed especially for children, without overpowering flavors.

Restaurant-style dining in Stavroupoli, street food vibes in Kamara

In Stavroupoli, Funghi Pizza & Pasta operates as a true “neighborhood living room.” With 60 tables and a spacious area that can host many guests, it also features a glass-enclosed kids’ play area—with an experienced staff member who keeps children creatively engaged—so parents can watch their kids while dining, as the little ones have fun playing, even with pizza dough.

This location offers a space that is not just kid-friendly, but genuinely restaurant-style, warm, and welcoming. That’s why families from all over the city choose it for meals, celebrations, parties, and events. It has become a favorite pizza spot in western Thessaloniki—a great value-for-money choice praised for its friendly, polite staff and, above all, its fast service.

The Kamara store, on the other hand, moves to street-food rhythms: take-away, delivery, and a few small tables for a quick, quality stop in the city center await you daily to enjoy your favorite slice!

Special mention should also be made of the wine cellar: their own wine, under the “Funghi” label—especially the rosé—has become particularly popular, complemented by selections from well-known Greek wineries.

Quality ingredients, respect for the customer, and warm hospitality

Behind all of this lies a simple yet strict philosophy: excellent raw ingredients, absolute respect for the customer, cleanliness, and warm hospitality. Every guest should feel genuinely respected. And that ultimately shows—in the taste, the space, and the people. Just as it does in the fact that Funghi is a family story that continues, slice by slice, like a pizza meant to be shared—and today stands as one of Thessaloniki’s most beloved dining choices.
