In Kerkini, where the lake meets the mountains of Beles and Krousia, livestock farming is an integral part of the area’s local heritage. Here, the Papadopoulos family has forged its own distinctive path, centred around the Greek buffalo and the careful utilisation of its meat. Kerkini Farm is a family-run business bringing together animal farming, production, processing and the distribution of meat products, with a steadfast focus on quality and locally sourced Greek produce.
Behind the business are Vasilis Papadopoulos and his wife, Eleni Avramidou, together with their two sons, Kleanthis and Stavros Papadopoulos. A family that chose to carry on the tradition of its homeland, investing in knowledge, the daily care of its animals and the creation of products that bring the authentic taste of the Greek countryside to our tables.
From a small butcher’s shop to an integrated production unit
The family’s story began in 1999, when they opened a small butcher’s shop in Kerkini. Their initial activity focused on the sale of fresh meat, but the family already had deep roots in agriculture, coming from generations involved in livestock farming and crop cultivation.
2002 marked a turning point, as the family began breeding buffalo. At the time, buffalo meat had yet to establish the reputation it enjoys among Greek consumers today. The animal was considered by some to be undervalued, with lower yields than cattle, while the distinctive flavour of its meat called for a careful approach and greater consumer awareness.
The Papadopoulos family, however, saw significant potential in the product. With dedication and passion, they worked to showcase the distinctive qualities of Greek buffalo and establish it as a special choice for the Greek table.
In 2007, the farm expanded and shifted to the exclusive breeding of buffalo, while in 2008 the company’s processing facility was established. From that point onwards, the business expanded into the processing, packaging and distribution of meat products, with the aim of creating a fully integrated production model.
A passion for animals that became a career choice
For the family’s two sons, Kleanthis and Stavros, becoming involved in the business was much more than simply continuing a family tradition. It was a conscious choice, born from their love of animals and their connection with their homeland.
As early as the age of 15, when their family asked whether they might wish to follow a different professional path, their answer was no. They wanted to remain close to the animals and become actively involved in the farm.
Stavros Papadopoulos, an agricultural technologist specialising in animal production, has played an important role in bringing a scientific approach to the farming process. Studying the buffaloes’ diet became a key part of the family’s efforts to improve the characteristics of the meat and achieve an exceptional taste.
Knowledge of animal production, combined with the experience of the parents, has created a model in which tradition and progress go hand in hand. Scientific expertise and everyday practical experience work together towards a common goal: producing high-quality products.
Today, both sons are actively involved in developing the family business, continuing a journey that began with a small butcher’s shop and has evolved into a fully integrated production operation.
Kerkini: An ideal home for buffalo
The choice of Kerkini was no coincidence. The area surrounding the lake is a unique habitat, rich in flora and fauna, while the lake itself provides a natural environment perfectly suited to the needs of buffalo.
The animals love water and spend a large part of their day in the lake, which is closely connected to their natural way of life. The Kerkini region is home to a significant proportion of Greece’s buffalo population, which has become a defining feature of the area’s rural identity.
The Kerkini Farm occupies a privately owned 10-acre site in the north-western part of Lake Kerkini, at the foothills of the Krousia Mountains. The facilities have been designed to meet the everyday needs of the animals and ensure their welfare.
The buffalo are raised using traditional methods, with extensive access to free grazing and the natural vegetation of the area. Depending on weather conditions, their diet is supplemented with animal feed grown and produced on the family’s own land.
This control over the animals’ diet is a fundamental part of the family’s philosophy. Care begins in the fields and continues through every stage of the production chain, right through to the finished product.
From field to shelf, with quality control at every stage
Kerkini Farm has developed an integrated, vertically structured production model, which is one of its defining characteristics. Buffalo farming, the production of a significant proportion of the animal feed, processing, packaging and distribution are all interconnected, creating one continuous production chain.
The philosophy of “from field to shelf” reflects this commitment to maintaining control over quality, from the raw ingredients through to the finished product. The family places particular emphasis on using Greek meat and working with Greek producers, while also supporting the primary sector and the local economy.
The company’s processing facility occupies a privately owned 200-square-metre premises and is equipped with modern machinery for the processing, production and packaging of meat products. Investments in infrastructure and new technologies, particularly since 2020, form part of the company’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its production processes.
Meanwhile, the traditional butcher’s shop in the village of Kerkini continues to serve as a retail outlet for the company’s products. The processing facility is located behind the shop, creating a direct link between retail and production.
Quality, however, is not limited to the raw ingredients. Kerkini Farm operates certified HACCP and ISO 22000:2018 food safety management systems, while complying with Greek and European legislation governing the production, processing and distribution of meat.
Greek buffalo meat and what makes It special
Buffalo meat lies at the heart of Kerkini Farm’s activities. The Papadopoulos family was among the businesses that worked systematically to promote the product and bring it closer to Greek consumers.
Its distinctive flavour is one of its defining characteristics. It is a rich-tasting meat that can be used in a wide range of recipes, from traditional slow-cooked dishes to more contemporary creations.
From a nutritional perspective, buffalo meat is notable for its protein and iron content, while it can contain less fat than certain comparable cuts of beef. As with any meat, however, its nutritional composition depends on the particular cut and how it is prepared.
The family has placed particular emphasis on the animals’ diet, considering it a decisive factor in the flavour and quality of the finished product. Stavros Papadopoulos’ work on buffalo nutrition forms part of this effort, with the aim of achieving a consistent, high-quality flavour.
Kerkini Farm has chosen to maintain control over the breeding of its own buffalo, an important part of its identity. At the same time, the business also offers Greek pork and beef sourced from certified partner farms and producers.
Traditional flavours with a contemporary approach
The Kerkini Farm range includes buffalo products, cured and processed meats, prepared specialities and fresh meat cuts. The company’s philosophy is based on authentic recipes, Greek seasonings, spices and fresh herbs, all carefully selected to bring out the natural flavour of the ingredients.
Tradition does not mean standing still. The family continues to invest in the development of new products, exploring different ways of using buffalo meat and responding to contemporary dietary preferences.
Among the company’s newer creations is buffalo chorizo, a spiced sausage smoked naturally over beech wood. This combination brings together the rich flavour of buffalo meat with the aromatic character of traditional smoking, resulting in a product with a distinctive personality.
The development of new products is part of the family’s wider vision, as it seeks to expand its range and offer products suitable for different eating habits and family occasions.
From Kerkini to every corner of Greece
Kerkini Farm’s journey extends far beyond the boundaries of the village. The company has developed a retail and wholesale distribution network across Greece, reaching as far as Crete, the Aegean and the Greek islands.
The family maintains a direct involvement in distribution, while in Thessaloniki it handles deliveries itself. Its presence within the professional food service and meat trade is also an important part of its activity, with products supplied to butchers, professionals and businesses in the sector.
Offering products with a clear provenance and a strong brand identity is one of the farm’s key priorities. The connection between its products, Kerkini and Greek production is something the family is determined to preserve, while also highlighting the potential and dynamism of the wider region.
A family business looking to the future
Kerkini Farm continues to evolve without losing sight of the values that shaped it. A commitment to quality, respect for tradition, care for the animals and collaboration with Greek producers remain at the heart of the business.
The family’s vision includes developing new products, strengthening exports, expanding partnerships within the Greek market and continuously upgrading its facilities and infrastructure. At the same time, protecting the environment is particularly important, as the natural landscape of Kerkini is an inseparable part of the farm’s identity and production philosophy.
The company aims to further strengthen the connection between Kerkini buffalo meat and local development, showcasing a product that forms part of the area’s history and gastronomic heritage.
From the small butcher’s shop established in 1999 to today’s modern, vertically integrated production unit, the Papadopoulos family has built a journey founded on a love of animals, perseverance and a deep understanding of production.
Kerkini Farm is a characteristic example of a Greek family business that chose to invest in its homeland and showcase a truly distinctive product. With its sights firmly set on the future, it continues to bring the authentic taste of the Greek countryside from Lake Kerkini to our tables.
