Nestled in the heart of Nea Potidea’s village square, where local life unfolds at its own relaxed pace, Kritamo has quickly established itself as one of the area’s most beloved dining destinations. This traditional mezedopoleio and tsipouradiko has filled a long-standing gap in the local food scene, welcoming guests throughout the year with authentic Greek flavours and genuine hospitality.

The building itself carries a story of its own. Once home to the village’s traditional café and confectionery, it stood abandoned for fourteen years before being given a remarkable new lease of life.

Everything changed on 30 June 2023, when the owner—drawing on more than 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry and a lifelong passion for kritamo (sea fennel)—decided to turn a childhood dream into reality.

With countless hours of personal craftsmanship, from restoring the building to handcrafting the wooden tables himself, he transformed the neglected property into the warm, welcoming space the village had been missing.

“I have nothing against modern restaurants, but I firmly believe traditional Greek cuisine deserves to be preserved. It’s one of the finest cuisines in the world,” he says—a philosophy reflected in every corner of the restaurant and every dish on the menu.

A kitchen built on authenticity

At Kritamo, the kitchen is a tribute to Greece’s rich culinary heritage, founded on exceptional ingredients, simplicity and authenticity.

Compromises simply aren’t made when it comes to quality. Around 95% of the menu is prepared entirely by hand, using carefully selected ingredients sourced primarily from local producers.

Fresh seafood and the catch of the day naturally take centre stage, while a carefully chosen selection of premium meats ensures there’s something to satisfy every member of the table. During the colder months, the restaurant becomes a cosy winter retreat, with its rich, traditional fish soup earning a loyal following among guests seeking comfort and warmth.

Signature flavours inspired by sea fennel

As its name suggests, kritamo (sea fennel) is the restaurant’s signature ingredient. Guests can enjoy it in several different forms—from homemade pickles to a refreshing salad with cherry tomatoes and crumbled feta, or as a distinctive garnish that adds a fresh, aromatic touch to many of the dishes.

The menu showcases an impressive variety of traditional Greek meze, prepared with genuine care and attention. Seafood lovers will appreciate favourites such as grilled sardines, cuttlefish slow-cooked in wine, steamed mussels and prawn saganaki, while the restaurant’s marinated octopus with vinegar and house-made marinated anchovies are both prepared entirely in-house.

Equally tempting are the traditional appetisers, including homemade dips, stuffed mushrooms, hand-rolled vine leaves and crispy cheese croquettes, each carefully prepared from scratch.

The experience continues with freshly grilled meats and comforting family recipes passed down through generations. Traditional pan-fried delicacies and succulent Greek meatballs evoke the flavours of home cooking, bringing back cherished memories of family gatherings around the table.

To round off the meal, guests are treated to a traditional complimentary dessert: creamy Greek yoghurt served with sour cherry preserve produced by a local women’s cooperative, accompanied by a biscuit.

Traditional charm with vintage and industrial touches

Every detail of Kritamo has been thoughtfully designed to create an atmosphere that feels warm, relaxed and unmistakably welcoming.

The interior blends traditional Greek character with the building’s original heritage, combining natural wood with carefully selected vintage and industrial elements around the bar area. From the carefully curated music to the inviting décor, every aspect contributes to an atmosphere that encourages guests to slow down, unwind and enjoy the moment.

A carefully selected drinks list

The drinks menu has been chosen to complement every dish and satisfy every preference.

One of the highlights is the house single-variety Muscat tsipouro, sourced directly from the Trikala region and served either with or without aniseed, according to guests’ preferences.

The wine list features an excellent selection of bottled Greek wines, while premium spirits including whisky and gin are also available, making Kritamo equally appealing for leisurely evening drinks.

This well-rounded offering makes the restaurant a favourite not only among visitors to Halkidiki but also with local residents, particularly during the quieter winter months when entertainment options in the area are more limited.

Authentic Greek hospitality you’ll want to experience again

Kritamo is far more than simply another traditional taverna. It is a place where passion, craftsmanship and a lifelong dream come together to create an authentic Greek dining experience.

Its honest flavours, unwavering commitment to handmade cooking and genuinely welcoming atmosphere make it one of Nea Potidea’s standout culinary destinations.

Whether you’re stopping by on a sunny summer afternoon for leisurely meze accompanied by a glass of tsipouro, or seeking the comfort of a steaming bowl of traditional fish soup during the winter months, Kritamo promises an experience that lingers long after the meal has ended—and one that will almost certainly leave you planning your next visit before you’ve even left.
