At 29 Palaion Patron Germanou Street, in the heart of Thessaloniki, you’ll find a unique destination for those who see dessert as so much more than simply the final course of a meal. Magoa Patisserie is where pastry chef George Avgeros, also known as the “chocolate magician”, presents his own take on contemporary patisserie, combining technique, imagination, exceptional ingredients and striking design.
The story of Magoa began in December 2022 with a simple yet ambitious idea: to make fine patisserie accessible to a wider audience and bring the creations of an accomplished chef into everyday life. Since then, the philosophy has remained unchanged, while the range of products has expanded significantly, creating a boutique patisserie where every sweet creation has its own distinctive character.
Fine patisserie with an open invitation to flavour
At Magoa, patisserie is treated as an art form, while remaining approachable and welcoming. Visitors can discover familiar flavours through a different perspective, alongside signature creations designed exclusively by George Avgeros.
The approach is rooted in French techniques, which the chef has mastered through his training and seminars at French pastry schools. The result is a collection of desserts with delicate textures, light flavours and harmonious combinations, where every element has its purpose.
Natural vanilla, spices, handmade pralines and jams, French butter, chocolate and exceptional-quality ingredients come together to create a flavour palette designed to showcase each component rather than overpower it.
For George Avgeros, after all, quality is not simply a professional choice; it is a way of life. Selecting the finest possible ingredients and constantly striving for the best result are fundamental principles behind his work.
Every dessert is a different experience
At Magoa, desserts are about far more than their appearance. The real surprise comes when you taste them and discover layer after layer of different textures and flavours. A mousse, a truffle, vanilla or chocolate can take on an entirely new dimension through the chef’s technique. The Magoa team explains the textures, characteristics and techniques behind each creation, gradually introducing visitors to a more sophisticated world of patisserie.
People do not come here simply to pick up a dessert. They come to discover a different kind of taste experience. And this experience has developed its own following, leading to a significant increase in demand for Magoa’s individual desserts, cakes and other creations.
From signature creations to sweet memories of past decades
Magoa’s range has expanded considerably and includes individual desserts, celebration cakes, cakes, biscuits, chocolates and much more, with each category retaining its own identity. Among the creations that have become favourites are the Dumbo Peanut, Magotella, the tiramisu shaped like a coffee cup and many others.
The chef’s desire to bring back desserts that have almost disappeared from modern patisserie is particularly interesting. Through the “We Love ’80s” concept, classic creations such as almond paste cake and Serano make a comeback, reimagined with a fresh design and contemporary techniques. Nostalgia meets creativity, while familiar flavours return to the display counter through a completely new perspective. At the same time, something new appears every week as the “dessert of the day” or “dessert of the week”, keeping the element of surprise alive.
When patisserie becomes a work of art
George Avgeros’ relationship with art began long before his career in patisserie. His involvement with woodcarving, ceramics and freehand drawing proved to be an important asset in his later career, influencing the way he approaches shape, aesthetics and detail.
At Magoa, this artistic perspective is immediately apparent. The chocolate sculptures are a characteristic example, while the creations often resemble miniature works of art rather than conventional desserts.
The chef’s technique goes well beyond what is already familiar in the market. Magoa also takes on special projects for events and corporate occasions, creating everything from 3D chocolate sculptures to other original constructions. Special moulds are now even produced for these projects, allowing an idea that has never been brought to life before to take on a real – and, most importantly, delicious – form.
A boutique patisserie that is constantly evolving
Despite its impressive variety, Magoa remains true to its boutique patisserie philosophy. Its desserts are individually crafted and carefully selected, offering a focused range that caters to different tastes without losing the distinctive personality of the space.
There are, of course, vegan options too, while bespoke creations can be made to order, allowing for truly unique proposals.
Festive seasons provide another opportunity for creativity, as Magoa transforms its displays and introduces different flavours and themed creations, turning the space into something straight out of a fairytale.
Since December 2022, Magoa Patisserie has earned its own distinctive place in Thessaloniki. George Avgeros’ patisserie proves that a dessert can be flavour, technique, memory, aesthetics and creativity all at once. With quality at its core, French techniques, exceptional ingredients and an endless appetite for experimentation, Magoa continues to refresh its range and offer yet another reason to return for a new and exciting taste discovery.
