For 14 years, Me to Zygi in Polichni has combined the charm of the traditional Greek grocery with the variety of a modern delicatessen, carefully sourcing products from small producers and distinctive corners of Greece.
Some shops offer far more than a selection of products; they create an entire experience centred on flavour, tradition and Greek craftsmanship. Me to Zygi, a grocery store at 10 Elpidos Street in Polichni, Thessaloniki, is one such place. It evokes the traditional grocery shops of the past, where products were carefully selected, many were sold loose by weight, and every shelf held its own little culinary treasures.
The story of Me to Zygi began in 2012, when the Georgakis family decided to embark on a new venture in the food industry while reconnecting with their family roots. Choosing Polichni was no coincidence. The family’s grandfather once ran a grocery shop just 20 metres from the current premises, while the mother of the siblings now running the business also grew up in the neighbourhood. Continuing this family legacy, Konstantinos and Maria Georgakis created a shop dedicated to quality Greek produce.
A journey through Greek flavours
Spread across approximately 150 square metres, Me to Zygi stocks around 3,000 products, making it a grocery store where customers can find virtually everything they need for their household shopping.
The business is built around discovering exceptional, distinctive products from different parts of Greece. With a father who worked as an agronomist, the family had the knowledge and enthusiasm to seek out producers, ingredients and flavours that deserve to be discovered.
Pulses, rice, flours, honey, cereals, nuts, spices and herbs share the shelves with cured meats, cheeses, pasta, sauces, olives, oils and much more. The result is a welcoming space where enticing aromas, delicious flavours, pleasant music and a friendly atmosphere combine to create a little gastronomic destination.
More than 500 varieties of cured meats and cheeses
Cured meats and cheeses hold a special place at Me to Zygi, with the shop having developed particular expertise in both categories. Its selection exceeds 500 varieties, bringing together familiar favourites and more unusual products that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
Highlights include graviera cheeses from Ios, Tinos and Mykonos, kavurma from Soufli and pastourma from Drama. These distinctive delicacies can elevate an everyday meal or add something special to a festive table or celebratory occasion. The selection also includes an extensive range of salted and cured seafood, alongside plenty of options to suit different tastes.
From Prespa and Goumenissa to Limnos and Crete
Exploring the shelves at Me to Zygi is like embarking on a culinary journey across Greece. Among the pulses, the beans sourced from a small producer in Prespa stand out, while the sauces, olives and Greek olive oils are also particularly popular.
The pasta selection includes handmade varieties and gourmet options, while wine enthusiasts can discover labels from Limnos and many other Greek wine-producing regions. Tsipouro from Goumenissa is another distinctive choice, offering visitors the opportunity to discover products with a strong local identity.
The shelves also feature honey, herbs, spices, nuts and freshly ground coffee. For those seeking something more unusual, there are truffle-based products and even fresh truffles, adding a gourmet touch to the shop’s extensive range.
Options for different dietary needs
The extensive selection goes well beyond traditional Greek products. Me to Zygi also stocks a wide range of organic goods, gluten-free products and items suited to specific dietary preferences, including options for those following a ketogenic diet.
Diet-friendly biscuits, cereals and other alternatives are also available, making it easy to find more specialised products under one roof.
And, of course, no traditional grocery would be complete without fresh fruit and vegetables, attractively displayed and ready to become part of the everyday shopping basket.
Quality at sensible prices
One of the defining principles at Me to Zygi is the commitment to combining high quality with fair, accessible prices. Choosing a distinctive or more refined product does not necessarily mean paying a premium that puts it out of reach.
The business also places great importance on sourcing products that stand out in their category, while supporting small-scale producers and passionate craftspeople. The emphasis is not simply on offering a wide selection, but on making thoughtful choices: products worth discovering that can bring something different to the everyday dining table.
This combination of quality, variety and value for money has shaped the shop’s identity and established it as a distinctive destination for food shopping in western Thessaloniki.
Your shopping delivered to your door
For added convenience, Me to Zygi also offers a delivery service. With a simple phone call, your shopping can be brought straight to your door, saving you a trip to the store.
The shop is open daily except Sundays, from 7.30 am to 9.30 pm.
Personalised gift hampers for every occasion
Me to Zygi caters for more than everyday shopping. For those looking for a thoughtful, personalised gift, the team creates bespoke hampers featuring wine, cured meats and cheeses. Each hamper can be tailored to the occasion and the recipient’s preferences, making it an ideal gift for friends, colleagues or loved ones.
Within Thessaloniki, deliveries are handled directly by the business, while hampers destined for locations outside the city can be sent through a transport company.
Fourteen years after opening, Me to Zygi remains true to its original vision: creating a place in Polichni where the traditions of the old-fashioned Greek grocery meet the modern desire for high-quality, distinctive and carefully selected products.
Above all, Me to Zygi represents a return to a more personal way of shopping for food, where quality matters, small producers are given a platform and every product has a story to tell. A genuine traditional grocery at the heart of Polichni, it brings flavours from every corner of Greece to the everyday table, making good food an enjoyable and affordable part of daily life.
