Perched at an altitude of around 320 metres above Neos Marmaras in Halkidiki, in the traditional village of Parthenonas, lies a destination well worth discovering: Paul’s Tavern. This authentic Greek taverna offers some of the finest local meats in the region, served in a breathtaking natural setting surrounded by olive groves and overlooking the Toroneos Gulf.

The story of Paul’s Tavern began in 1976, when Parthenonas was still largely abandoned. A visionary local from Neos Marmaras, Paul — or Polychronis Karapapas, as he was formally known — decided to transform the old building and surrounding land into a unique gift for his wife, Katerina.

By 1978, despite the village lacking electricity, running water and even proper road access, Paul opened what is known today as Paul’s Tavern. At the time, reaching the village involved navigating dirt tracks and difficult terrain, making the venture remarkably pioneering for its era.

Exceptional local produce

Today, the business is proudly run by the second generation, with the founder’s daughter and her husband continuing the family tradition with the same passion and dedication.

The taverna sits at the end of a scenic route winding through olive groves, in a space built primarily from natural materials such as stone and wood, fully embracing the architectural character of mountainous Halkidiki. It is the last building as you ascend towards the village, offering visitors not only remarkable tranquillity but also spectacular uninterrupted views.

Here, guests can enjoy some of the region’s finest local products: premium meats, Halkidiki olives and olive oil, fresh salads prepared with vegetables sourced locally and from the owners’ own garden, as well as house-produced local wine. Aromatic herbs including thyme, mint and oregano — gathered from the surrounding hillsides — are used generously throughout the dishes, adding authenticity and depth of flavour.

All of this is served against the stunning backdrop of the Toroneos Gulf, between the first and second peninsulas of Halkidiki.

Local meats at their finest

The cuisine is deeply rooted in Greek and Mediterranean tradition, with a strong emphasis on expertly prepared meat dishes — perfectly suited to the mountain setting.

The mixed grill is highly recommended, particularly for larger groups wishing to sample a variety of flavours. Signature dishes include beef steak, milk-fed veal chops, farmhouse-style pork steaks, handmade burgers and perfectly grilled chicken.

The menu continues to evolve, with new additions inspired by contemporary culinary trends and guest preferences, while always remaining faithful to the restaurant’s traditional character.

Handmade starters and traditional meze

Among the must-try starters are the hand-cut fried potatoes, homemade pies, handmade dolmades and the baked potato stuffed with cheese and bacon.

For lovers of slow-cooked comfort food, the clay-pot beef with traditional hilopites pasta and the homemade moussaka are particularly memorable, delivering rich flavours and unmistakably homemade character.

Although located away from the coast, seafood still plays an important role through a variety of traditional Greek meze dishes designed to accompany ouzo and tsipouro — ideal for those looking for lighter alternatives to meat.

To accompany your meal, guests can enjoy the tavern’s own house-produced tsipouro and grappa, wines made from local grape varieties, a wide selection of beers and excellent homemade liqueurs, perfect alongside dessert at the end of the evening.

A view worth the journey

Arriving earlier in the day offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy coffee, ice cream or dessert while taking in the extraordinary scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

In the evening, the setting becomes even more magical. Guests can pair the spectacular sunset over the Toroneos Gulf with a refreshing cocktail while watching the sky transform into a palette of vivid colours that resemble brushstrokes across a painting. The ideal arrival time is around 7pm, just in time to experience the sunset at its most breathtaking.

Every Friday and Saturday, live music adds to the atmosphere, creating an even more memorable dining experience. Next to the tavern, visitors will also find a charming souvenir and gift shop.

Dining at the “Jewel of Marmaras”

Just a short distance from the crystal-clear beaches of Neos Marmaras, Paul’s Tavern offers something entirely different from the typical seaside dining experience: cool mountain air, panoramic views and authentic flavours in one of the most beautiful settings in Halkidiki.

The venue is also ideal for weddings, christenings and special celebrations, with a capacity of up to 350 guests. Spacious, refreshing and family-friendly, it offers children the freedom to play safely while parents relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Parthenonas is often referred to as “the jewel of Marmaras”, and at Paul’s Tavern they certainly know how to showcase the very best of the region — beautifully presented on every plate.
