In June 2006, Pulp Bar opened its doors at 8 Alexandrou Svolou Street, becoming one of the most distinctive nightlife spots in the heart of Thessaloniki. Behind its creation is Margaritis Tsoukalas, a man with many years of experience behind the bar and a deep connection with the world of drinks.

The idea for Pulp grew out of his experience behind the bar, as well as his many travels abroad. The images, flavours and different cultures he encountered became a source of inspiration for a venue that was intended to stand out from the very beginning.

When Pulp first opened, it offered around 50 beer labels. Over the years, however, a passion for brewing and a constant search for new discoveries led to a much larger and more comprehensive collection. Today, Pulp retains the authentic cult DNA that has defined it from the start. Its extensive beer selection, constant search for new labels, vintage aesthetic, music and lively atmosphere have created a venue with a distinctive place on Thessaloniki’s social map.

From Belgian monasteries to 250 beers from around the world

Pulp’s relationship with beer has never been limited to simply drinking it. Margaritis Tsoukalas travelled to Belgium, visiting monasteries and breweries and discovering first-hand how different beers are made, with particular attention to small-scale breweries and their distinctive labels.

Today, the selection has grown to around 250 beers from around the world, covering a wide range of styles and flavour profiles. Beer has always been the star of Pulp, with options available both by the bottle and on draught. From pilsners and lagers to Weiss, red and dark beers, the variety offers plenty of opportunities to explore different flavours.

The collection goes beyond beer, too. Pulp also offers an extensive range of alcoholic drinks, covering all the main styles and categories, from cocktails, wines and spirits to a particularly interesting whisky selection.

And the search never stops. New labels are constantly being discovered and added, keeping the bar’s offering fresh, exciting and ever-changing.

Another factor that has contributed to Pulp’s enduring appeal is its excellent value for money, with particularly accessible prices for a venue in the city centre.

A pub with British and American influences

Pulp has created a space reminiscent of a classic British pub, while incorporating elements inspired by American bar culture. Vintage objects sourced from abroad, framed pictures, mirrors and unusual decorative pieces, many of them connected with beer and particularly Belgian brewing tradition, create an environment full of personality.

Low lighting, posters and signs enhance the vintage atmosphere, while red and black dominate the interior. Screens continuously show Pulp Fiction, adding another reference to pop and cinematic culture.

The venue’s name and aesthetic also draw inspiration from Temple Bar, the historic district of Dublin, with the name referring to the area’s original pub and its subsequent evolution and popularity.

Rock, soul and Britpop on the soundtrack

Music is an integral part of the Pulp experience. Rock ’n’ roll, soul and Britpop create the soundtrack, perfectly complementing the pub’s character and distinctive aesthetic. From time to time, the venue also welcomes guest DJs, with their sets carefully tailored to Pulp’s unique atmosphere.

From 9.30am until late at night

Pulp is not a venue that only comes alive after dark. From 9.30am, it welcomes the new day with coffee and a range of drinks, offering a different kind of setting for those who want to start their morning somewhere with genuine character.

Coffee is where the day begins, while as the hours pass, the atmosphere gradually shifts and the bar takes centre stage. For those looking for something to accompany their beer, drink or coffee, there is also a selection of finger food, club sandwiches and toast.

Driven by a passion for beer and bar culture, shaped by influences from travels abroad and brought to life through an impressive collection of labels and a venue with plenty of character, Pulp remains a distinctive meeting point throughout the day. A genuine piece of pub culture in the heart of Thessaloniki, where beer, music and atmosphere continue to take centre stage.
