“Voukakrato” was opened on Christmas 2023, at number 6 on the cobbled street of Kalapothaki, by Nikos Tsobanidis and since then it has been a new destination of taste and enjoyment, in one of the most central parts of the city and just a breath away from its port. The name “Voukakrato” reflects the tradition and authenticity that characterize every dish served in the place and its name has been associated with quality food and nice conversations.

The name of this new restaurant comes from Byzantine cuisine, where “boukakrato” was the meal they had before breakfast and meant: bread (“bouka”), dipped in wine (from “akratos”, the unadulterated wine, of the Holy Communion). With this, they welcome to “Voukakrato”, all the customers of the restaurant: with sourdough bread, which they make themselves, and red wine from the cellar, in which they will urge you to wet your bite, before tasting it.

At “Voukakrato”, they believe in good company, good food and wine, flavors and aromas that evoke memories from our childhood. They are inspired by tradition and adapt it to today.

They love Greek cuisine and use exclusively Greek raw materials in their cooking. Accordingly, their cellar has wine labels from vineyards from all over Greece, but also many options in tsipouro and ouzo. Flavors from all over the country.

Cuisine based on good raw material

The cuisine, based on simplicity, is based on good raw material. On the menu, you will find a wide variety of refined flavors of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. The freshest and quality seasonal ingredients are highlighted, which ensure freshness and complete taste, while the restaurant’s chefs insist on perfection and creativity in everything they prepare for you.

The menu is edited by Nikos Tsobanidis, always having the chefs Apostolos Tsaktsiras and Christina Mau by his side. Together, they use the open fire of the wood-fired oven to give character to the taste, while all the preparations in doughs, pies and breads are made by their own hands.

In the kitchen of “Voukakrato”, they cook with passion, from traditional fried meatballs in pure oil with tomato sauce, which smell like “grandmother”, recipes with fresh Greek fish, with special combinations, such as baked chickpeas in the shell with samphire and shrimps, but also seafood, such as octopus in the wood oven.

Everything that goes into the dishes – even the salt fish, such as lakerda – is prepared by them. The breads, the pies – which change daily – and the sweets, again, pass through the hands of Stella Papakonstantinou, who puts all her art into your dessert.

Eating at a large table

Characteristic of the “Voukakrato” space, and the one that highlights more than all the elements of the restaurant’s philosophy, is the large bar, next to the open kitchen. Made so that everyone can enjoy the culinary show that goes up every day in the wood-fired oven.

It has not been chosen by chance, since the desire of the people of the restaurant is to bring people together, groups, as if they were all sitting together, at a large table. Even if someone comes alone, he is given the opportunity to become part of the shop’s company, in its warm and welcoming environment and to be able to relax and enjoy his meal in comfort, listening to instrumental music selections and various Greek songs.

“Voukakrato” also has an outdoor area, with tables on Kalapothaki street, one of the most attractive neighborhoods of the city. It is the “hangout” of the neighborhood, where groups return for the flavors, the friendly atmosphere and the variety of wine options.

From early afternoon, in the evening, after work, but also at night, “Voukakrato” welcomes people of all ages, who have a common denominator: the taste requirement. And they know they will be compensated.

At “Voukakrato”, the emphasis is, after all, on quality and service, with respect for the customer being the main axis of the restaurant’s philosophy. They will always offer you the best and satisfy your every culinary desire, so that you have a final overall experience – a trip to the area of Greek gastronomy and Mediterranean nutrition, which will remain unforgettable!

Tip: “Voukakrato”, operates daily 12.00 – 23.30.
