There are businesses that follow trends, and there are those that create them. ALFA Ice Cream undoubtedly belongs in the second category. Since 1958, this family-run business has built its name around quality, tradition and continuous innovation, remaining a much-loved favourite among generations of customers, young and old.

From Bologna to Thessaloniki

The story of ALFA is the story of a visionary founder, a family that carried his legacy forward, and a philosophy built around authentic ingredients, traditional craftsmanship and an unwavering respect for the customer.

It all began with the company’s founder, Michalis Architektonidis. While studying Chemistry in Bologna, Italy, he worked in a traditional ice cream workshop, gaining first-hand experience of the secrets behind authentic Italian gelato. It was there that his passion for ice cream was born — a passion that would go on to transform the story of ice cream in Thessaloniki.

When he returned to Greece in 1958, he founded ALFA in a small workshop in the centre of Thessaloniki, where the ice cream was both made and sold on the premises — a pioneering concept for its time. From that moment onwards, the business embarked on a steady journey of growth that continues to this day.

A story of evolution, built on tradition

ALFA’s journey has been marked by steady growth and a series of important milestones. In 1970, the company moved to its own premises, while a few years later the factory took on its present form, expanding to 1,000 square metres of production facilities.

In 1980, ALFA opened its first modern gelateria in Thessaloniki. During the 1990s, the company expanded its operations to the Cyclades, Sporades and throughout Central Macedonia, bringing its authentic flavours to an ever-growing number of customers.

The new millennium found the company fully modernised, with state-of-the-art equipment and upgraded facilities. In 2010, ALFA implemented the internationally recognised ISO 22000 food safety management system, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to quality and food safety.

In 1992, the next generation took the reins, successfully continuing the family tradition. Respecting the original recipes while constantly exploring new ingredients and flavour combinations, the new generation has guided ALFA into the modern era without compromising the character that made the brand distinctive.

In 2023, the ALFA family expanded further, with the third and fourth generations becoming actively involved in the business and a new shop opening in Myrina, Lemnos. Then, in 2025, another contemporary store opened in the heart of Thessaloniki, at 12 Pavlou Mela Street, giving both locals and visitors another destination for authentic indulgence, alongside the historic shop at 143 Delfon Street.

The secret lies in the ingredients and expertise

What truly sets ALFA Ice Cream apart is its non-negotiable commitment to quality. The base of its dairy ice creams is fresh milk sourced from small family farms in Central Macedonia. Every ice cream is made exclusively with carefully selected ingredients that meet the company’s exacting quality standards — with no ready-made mixes, preservatives, artificial colourings, vegetable fats or trans fats. The emphasis is firmly placed on natural ingredients and authentic flavour.

One of ALFA’s best-kept secrets is the exceptionally low overrun achieved during production. In other words, the ice cream is not bulked up with excessive amounts of air. The result is an exceptionally rich flavour, a dense and luxurious texture, and remarkable staying power.

The company has always placed great emphasis on sourcing outstanding ingredients from small Greek producers, including wild figs from Florina, natural Chios mastiha and salep for its authentic dondurma. These are complemented by premium ingredients from around the world, such as Belgian chocolate, Madagascan vanilla and Brazilian mango, among many others. Each ingredient plays its part in creating an unmistakably distinctive final product.

More than 50 flavours to suit every taste

The ALFA shop displays are a true celebration of colour, aroma and flavour. Classic favourites such as vanilla, chocolate, dark chocolate, stracciatella, praline, Chios mastiha, mocha and pistachio sit alongside traditional creations such as dondurma (kaimaki), rum & raisin, Tutti-Frutti, fig and rose.

At the same time, contemporary favourites such as Cheesecake, Speculoos, Dubai, Oreo, Brownies, Tiramisu, Nutrella, Bubble Bubble and Choco Banana are constantly refreshing the range, giving customers the chance to discover something new with every visit. In total, ALFA offers around 56 different flavours, with the selection continually expanding through new creations.

Sorbets and vegan options

The company’s sorbets are particularly popular, offering high-quality vegan options with 0% fat. Made exclusively with natural fruit, they preserve the fruit’s authentic aromas and nutritional qualities.

Strawberry, forest fruits, mango, blueberry, sour cherry, raspberry, lemon, green apple and many other flavours deliver a refreshing burst of natural fruitiness. They are an ideal choice both for those following a vegan diet and for anyone looking for something lighter and especially refreshing.

Premium parfaits, still made by hand

A special place in ALFA’s range is reserved for its renowned parfaits. These premium ice creams have been prepared using the same gentle, traditional handmade method for more than 60 years, with fresh cream and Italian meringue.

Armenonville, cream, dark chocolate and mocha, alongside creations such as Pavlova, are distinguished by their velvety texture, rich character and beautifully balanced flavours.

Desserts made to be enjoyed with ice cream

Visitors can also choose from more than twenty combinations of individual ice-cream desserts, impressive ice-cream cakes and a selection of tempting desserts, including a light and fluffy chocolate soufflé, authentic brownies and apple pie — all perfectly suited to pairing with their favourite ALFA ice cream flavours.

The values that make the difference

Behind every flavour lies a set of principles that has remained unchanged for decades. Producing safe, high-quality products, using carefully selected natural ingredients, building long-standing relationships of trust with suppliers and employees, and treating every customer with respect are the values on which ALFA was founded — and on which it continues to grow.

Reliable wholesale supply across Greece

Alongside its retail shops, ALFA has also developed a strong wholesale operation, with more than 1,000 active customers, becoming a trusted partner for businesses in the food service and hospitality sectors throughout Greece.

Cafés, patisseries, restaurants, hotels, beach bars and retail businesses choose ALFA Ice Cream knowing that behind every product stands a company with decades of experience, consistently high standards and a proven commitment to its business partners.

With an organised distribution network, strict adherence to cold-chain requirements and the ability to meet a wide range of business needs, the company continues to expand its presence, building trusted relationships with professionals looking for high-quality products and excellent service.

At a time when authenticity is becoming increasingly rare, ALFA Ice Cream proves that tradition and contemporary creativity can work together beautifully. With more than 65 years of history, two company-owned shops in Thessaloniki — at 143 Delfon Street and 12 Pavlou Mela Street — an unwavering investment in the quality of its ingredients and an impressive, ever-evolving range of flavours, this family business continues to create experiences that awaken memories while making new ones.

And, indeed, every spoonful is a reminder that truly great ice cream is more than just another dessert. It is a tradition — one that is passed from generation to generation…
