Back in the Thessaloniki of the 1930s, when the shores of the Thermaic Gulf were still untouched and peaceful, an entire culture grew around traditional fish taverns. Areas such as Peraia, Bahçe Tsifliki, and Agia Triada became beloved destinations for the city’s residents seeking carefree moments by the sea. Small boats crossing the Thermaic Gulf gave these excursions an almost romantic character, filled with simplicity and authenticity.
It was within this deeply rooted tradition that “Antonis” Fish Tavern was established in 1981, when Antonis Saflekas founded the business and gave it his name. Guided by the principles of quality, authenticity, and homemade care, he created a place that became one of the most beloved dining spots among the people of Thessaloniki.
Tsitsanis’ favorite spot and a living history
The history of the venue is inseparably linked to one of the greatest figures of Greek folk music, Vasilis Tsitsanis. The historic Poseidonio, once located on the pier of Bahçe Tsifliki and serving as the foundation of today’s fish tavern, hosted many important personalities of the era.
Among them was Tsitsanis, who, after leaving the telegraph battalion, remained in the area and, during the difficult years of censorship under the 4th of August Regime and the hardships of the civil war period, secretly composed some of his first songs there. It was in this very place that melodies were born which would later become legendary folk music hits.
To this day, the table where the great composer used to sit is still preserved. According to local tradition, it was there that the iconic song “Pame Tsarka sto Baxé Tsifliki” (“Let’s Take a Stroll to Bahçe Tsifliki”) was written, keeping alive a precious chapter of Thessaloniki’s musical and cultural history.
45 years of culinary consistency
For more than four decades, the tavern has been a landmark for those seeking excellent seafood and authentic flavors. The loss of Antonis Saflekas one year ago left a significant void, yet his journey and vision remain alive in every dish and every detail of the experience.
The philosophy he left behind — dedication to quality, respect for the customer, and love for good food — continues to guide the new generation. Perhaps this is his greatest achievement: creating something that does not end with his absence, but continues to evolve and offer memorable experiences.
Today, the baton has passed to his son, Alexandros, who respectfully continues the family tradition while also bringing a contemporary spirit to the venue.
A renovated space with the same warm soul
The complete renovation of the interior has transformed “Antonis” Fish Tavern into a modern yet welcoming environment. The design combines contemporary aesthetics with elements that honor the history of the space, creating an atmosphere that feels both elegant and familiar.
Equally impressive is the outdoor area. The seaside tables offer a unique dining experience, especially during the warmer months, when the cool breeze of the Thermaic Gulf perfectly accompanies every meal. It is the ideal setting for relaxation, whether for a family gathering or a special occasion.
A menu that honors the sea
The heart of “Antonis” Fish Tavern naturally beats in its kitchen. Fresh fish takes center stage, with choices to satisfy every preference: from grouper, sea bream, and sea bass to red mullet, sole, sardines, and anchovies.
Among the standout dishes are the stuffed calamari, steamed ray fish with white mustard sauce, grilled octopus, and steamed mussels. Shrimp pasta, shrimp saganaki, seafood risotto, and mussel pilaf complete a rich gastronomic journey infused with the aromas of the sea.
For meat lovers, the options are equally impressive: pork tigania, beef kontosouvli, handmade meatballs, and a variety of freshly grilled meats ensure that every guest finds something to enjoy.
Hospitality that makes the difference
Beyond the food, what truly sets “Antonis” Fish Tavern apart is its philosophy: quality, attentive service, and a genuine love for fine seafood.
It is no coincidence that the venue has hosted countless personal moments over the years — from romantic dinners to weddings and baptisms. As the people behind the tavern say, many have “fallen in love, shared love, and celebrated” in this historic place.
A tradition that continues
“Antonis” Fish Tavern is a living piece of Thessaloniki’s history, evolving without ever losing its identity. With Alexandros now at the helm, its renewed image, and its unwavering commitment to quality, it continues to offer authentic seaside experiences.
“Antonis” Fish Tavern was never built on trends — it was built on something far more difficult: consistency. Consistency in its food, in its hospitality, and in the way it makes you feel every time you sit at its table. It is one of those places you visit not only for the meal, but to experience flavor, memory, and continuity. And perhaps that is its greatest strength.
Come and rediscover it for yourself…
