Walking up Iktinou Street, it’s now impossible not to pause at number 4 on the pedestrian street and admire a new “gem” of a place that opened in December 2025 and introduces itself as a “café–patisserie”: Fontaniera.

In a part of the city that until now lacked retro aesthetics—and, as it turns out, was always in need of a touch of it—this new café-bar emerges like a scene that was missing from the picture. The first impression, with its floral decoration and attention to detail both indoors and outdoors, instantly wins over every passerby and visitor: flowers, vintage touches, and an atmosphere that sparks spontaneous joy at the sight of such a charming addition in exactly this spot.

Fontaniera is an open invitation to a home-like space that always awaits you with “grandma’s” tableware ready and the warmth of old Thessaloniki coming alive within its walls. Thanks to its truly imaginative aesthetic, it feels like it has sprung out of a 1960s urban living room, infused with the elegance of a French bistro.

The ritual of treating

The entire philosophy of this new café-bar is based on the concept of hospitality. It’s not just the vintage décor that will relax you—from the flowers in vases to the beautiful retro tableware—but also the feeling that you’re visiting your grandmother’s house or that of a dear friend in the countryside.

Following the rhythm of the day, the complimentary treats reflect the refined manners of a bygone urban era: your morning Illy coffee is accompanied by a round koulouri, at noon you’ll find a stuffed cookie from “Cookie Man,” while in the afternoon the shop’s namesake fondant bowl “deploys” the classic, nostalgic Noisetta chocolate, transporting you to cherished memories and making time feel like it flows a little slower—and a little more beautifully.

Handmade gastronomy, sweet and savory

On the menu, summarized as “a little savory, a lot sweet, and plenty to drink,” your options unfold. The desserts are handmade, fresh, and seem as if they’ve just come out of the kitchen. The Matilda (with chocolate mousse and melted hazelnut praline) and the carrot cake have already gained a loyal following, while the traditional chocolate log cake, cheesecake with homemade sour cherry preserve, and apple pie with cream and caramel awaken childhood memories.

For those seeking something savory, the options go beyond the usual: Sfakian pies (try the one with carob or the one stuffed with stamnagathi greens and fennel) and focaccia with basil pesto and myzithra cheese offer a delicious alternative at any time of day.

If you’re in the mood for a hearty brunch, the “Fragkosyriani” (fried eggs and grilled halloumi on corn bread) and the “Lobster” (brioche bun with turkey, kasseri cheese, tomato, mayonnaise, and a fried egg on top, served with green salad) are among the most satisfying choices.

Every morning, warm bougatsa with custard or cheese awaits you, while throughout the day you’ll also find cold sandwiches and homemade lemonade.

A spot for everyone

Despite its retro aesthetic—which also carries hints of a French bistro—Fontaniera remains a calm and conversation-friendly space. In the morning, you’ll find older visitors enjoying the tranquility of Iktinou, while in the afternoon younger crowds and people in their 30s and 40s gather at the well-kept outdoor tables and the enchanting interior to enjoy drinks from the extensive bar selection, accompanied by carefully curated retro and modern Greek tunes.

With the experience of its creators from another already successful venture in Aristotelous Square, Fontaniera proves that true luxury lies in courtesy, beautiful tableware, and handmade flavors that carry something of memory, something of the past, and something of the present.

Because sometimes, all you need is a good coffee and a small treat that makes you feel exactly what the owners intend: like one of their own.

Tip 1: Fontaniera operates daily from 07:30 to 23:30 (hours may expand as the weather improves).
Tip 2: In addition to dining in, takeaway is also available.
