The beginning of the company is marked by the partnership of Yannis Paraskevopoulos, Agronomist of AUTH and PhD in Oenology of Bordeaux II University, with Leon Karatsalos, Agronomist of AUTH.
With its trademark, the ammonite, the fossil of the Aegean sea, “Gaia Wines” stands out for its passion and obsession in highlighting Greek varieties, creating great wines for wine lovers, within Greece and abroad.
Nemea Vineyard and Winery
For this effort, “Gaia Wines” has two wineries, in areas that meet the criteria for the production of high-level wines and are located in the most important wine-growing zones of the country. The first in Nemea, in the heart of a privately owned vineyard, in Koutsi, at an altitude of 550 meters, where the modern industrial building houses a sophisticated winery, certified with ISO 22,000, with a capacity of 3,060 hectoliters that offers, with its equipment and technological infrastructure, what is needed an oenologist, for the vertical production of wines of exceptional quality.
The vineyard, which extends from 250 to 850 meters high, is characterized by the wide variation in soil and climate conditions within the Nemea PDO zone, while the limestone soils on the mountain slopes and stony foothills are the most ideal for the production of Agiorgitikos, with great aging potential. This category includes the Gaia Estate with 26 international awards, the Gaia S and the Agiorgitiko of Gaia, with 8 top ratings from recognized competent bodies abroad.
The facilities in Santorini
The other winery, in Santorini, on the eastern side of the island, between the settlements of Kamari and Monolithos, is housed in an excellent, stone-built building from the beginning of the previous century.
The former “tomato farm”, was restored by “Gaia Wines” and equipped with the most modern winemaking systems, creating the ideal conditions for the production of high quality wines from the local Assyrtiko variety. A charismatic and unique wine-making ecosystem on the planet, with self-rooted century-old vineyards and the traditional configuration of the vines in the shape of a “bun”, in a volcanic, porous soil, with many hours of sunshine and absence of rainfall throughout the year, sea fog and strong summer winds, contributes decisively to the creation of rare and unique white wines.
It is worth mentioning “Thalassitis” and its aged “Celar Aged” version, with 25 international awards each, the new and award-winning “Nychteri” of 2019, the Assyrtiko of Gaia Wild Fermend, 26 times awarded, as well as the most recent company winemaker, “Ammonite” which, reintroducing the gifts of Assyrtikos and its ability to age over time, won, this year, the 1st place in the “50 Great Greek Wines”!
Consistency, quality and dedication
Today, with consistency and quality as a compass and with dedication to a high level of service, the name “Gaia Wines” has been recognized by consumers in more than 25 countries around the world. The company’s international presence is not limited to the European Continent but extends from Japan to the Arab countries, and North and South America, to Australia and New Zealand. Both the exports and the awards that the labels of “Gaia Wines” win every year, are the justification of the vision of its creators: A journey in the world of wine, guided by passion and knowledge and driven by the thirst for new experiences and wine conquests.
