Some flavours need no introduction. They carry their own memories, their own aromas and a story passed down from one generation to the next. At the family-run NETTOS, that story began with coffee and nuts and, for almost 70 years, has evolved around one enduring principle: sourcing exceptional ingredients and bringing out their very best through expert processing.
From aromatic coffee blends to the distinctive taste of a perfectly roasted Greek nut, every product reflects a culinary philosophy centred on freshness, quality and authenticity.
Since 1958, when Georgios Nettos opened a traditional coffee shop in Charilaou, NETTOS has developed a distinctive identity of its own. From the very first day, coffee was carefully processed and served fresh to the local community. Over the years, the range expanded to include nuts, dried fruit, delicatessen products, organic produce, herbs, tea and carefully selected wines and spirits.
What began as a family business gradually evolved into a complete destination for those who appreciate distinctive flavours, while never losing the passion, care and family values on which it was founded.
The second generation took over the family business, carrying forward Georgios Nettos’ love of coffee, dedication to quality ingredients and commitment to excellence. At the same time, it gave the company a new direction, expanding its presence with the opening of the Therma store in Thessaloniki in 2007, followed twelve years later, in 2019, by the Plagiari store, and this year by the newest location in Konstantinopolitika.
Today, the third generation is carrying the story forward. Respecting the experience and traditions of the past while embracing contemporary tastes and trends, NETTOS continues to evolve and redefine its identity.
Coffee as an art
More than six decades later, coffee remains at the heart of the business. What has changed is the way the third generation approaches the raw ingredient. The journey no longer begins with ready-made blends, but with green coffee beans and the countries where they are grown.
NETTOS sources green coffee directly from producing countries, with a particular focus on specialty coffees and exceptional raw materials. Members of the third generation have travelled to coffee-growing regions themselves, seeking out distinctive beans and gaining first-hand insight into different approaches to cultivation and production.
This way of thinking shifts the focus beyond the final cup, embracing the entire journey that comes before it.
One of the defining elements of the NETTOS philosophy is that the coffee is roasted in-house in Greece. And roasting is never treated as a one-size-fits-all process. Espresso requires one approach, Greek coffee another, while filter coffee calls for something different again.
The roasting profile must respond to the characteristics of each bean and to the flavour profile intended for the cup. Processing is therefore not seen as a standardised step, but as a way of unlocking and enhancing the true character of the raw ingredient.
Freshness is equally important. Coffee is roasted fresh, allowing as much of the journey as possible — from green bean to finished product — to remain under NETTOS’ own careful control.
From bean to cup
NETTOS’ relationship with coffee does not end on the shelf. The coffee served in its stores is prepared to equally high standards, completing the journey from sourcing and roasting through to grinding, extraction and, finally, the cup.
Visitors can enjoy their coffee in-store or take it away, accompanied by a selection of handmade creations produced in the NETTOS workshop.
Even breakfast follows the same philosophy. Rather than relying solely on ready-made products, NETTOS creates handmade options designed to complement the coffee and turn breakfast into a complete experience.
Nuts: When the ingredient makes all the difference
If coffee is the historical starting point of NETTOS, nuts are its other enduring pillar. Here too, the focus goes far beyond variety. What matters is the quality of the raw ingredient and the expertise involved in turning it into the finished product.
NETTOS places particular emphasis on Greek nuts and on working with Greek producers. Selecting the right raw materials is an important part of the process, as different origins, varieties, sizes and natural characteristics require different methods of handling and preparation.
The nuts are then freshly roasted in the company’s own workshop. Roasting requires both knowledge and precision: done well, it enhances the natural characteristics of the nut without overpowering its authentic flavour.
This careful approach is one of the reasons NETTOS’ roasted nuts have remained an integral part of the company’s identity for decades.
From nuts to handmade creations
In recent years, NETTOS has expanded its offering with another important element: its own range of healthy, handmade creations. Once again, the philosophy starts with the ingredients at the heart of the business. Products such as nuts are given a new life through the creation of innovative and contemporary treats.
Almond-flour cookies, granola, handmade bars and other creations are characteristic examples of this approach. Many of the options contain no added sugar, without sacrificing flavour or enjoyment. The aim is to create a modern snack that is delicious, satisfying and in tune with today’s eating habits.
At the same time, the range of handmade sweet creations evolves with the seasons. This gives NETTOS the freedom to experiment with new combinations and introduce products that are constantly changing rather than remaining fixed — evolving alongside contemporary tastes and culinary trends.
Since 1958, NETTOS has changed, grown and embraced modernity, but its foundations remain exactly the same: exceptional ingredients and the knowledge and craftsmanship required to bring out their best.
Coffee remains at its heart, while Greek nuts continue to form a second enduring pillar. Around these, a contemporary range of healthy snacks and handmade creations has emerged.
Three generations after its founding, this family business continues to honour its heritage while opening the door to new food trends and modern flavour combinations. The result is a rich world of tastes, brought together by one common thread: quality, craftsmanship and the passion of the people behind NETTOS.
