Some places simply stand the test of time. Others become part of a city’s history. Thermaikos Bar, at 21 Nikis Avenue, undoubtedly belongs to the latter. Since 1992, it has been one of Thessaloniki’s most iconic hangouts, growing alongside generations of locals who have come here to relax, socialise, celebrate and express themselves.

Its story began when Babis Zoumpoulis and his wife Natassa, both with extensive experience in Thessaloniki’s nightlife through some of the city’s best-known clubs of the era, including Basement, Moby and Amnesia, decided to create something different. Their vision was simple yet distinctive: a place where people could enjoy a coffee or a drink with Thessaloniki’s greatest natural landmark right in front of them — the Thermaic Gulf.

When Thessaloniki’s waterfront was still finding its feet

Back in the early 1990s, the bustling Thessaloniki waterfront we know today looked very different. Only a handful of venues operated along Nikis Avenue, and the area had a much quieter, more relaxed character.

Thermaikos originally opened as a traditional urban café, but from its earliest days it was clear that it had the potential to become something much more. With its distinctive atmosphere and prime waterfront setting, it quickly established itself as a new focal point for Thessaloniki’s social scene. In many ways, it helped shift the city’s youthful energy towards the waterfront, paving the way for the transformation that followed in the years to come.

A place that became part of the city’s cultural identity

Thermaikos soon evolved into a meeting place for people with different ideas, interests and creative pursuits. Its spaces have hosted exhibitions, music events, countless parties and memorable nights that have become part of Thessaloniki’s collective memory.

Artists, musicians, creatives and personalities from Greece and abroad have all passed through its doors, helping shape the venue’s distinctive cultural identity. Every corner has its own story to tell, while many of the decorative pieces throughout the bar carry a unique symbolism accumulated over the years.

The music that defined an era

If there is one thing that has always been inseparable from the Thermaikos experience, it is music.

House music found one of its most important homes in Thessaloniki here, and many believe that Thermaikos played a significant role in bringing the sound to the city’s café-bar scene. Music has always been carefully curated, with accomplished DJs creating the kind of atmosphere and energy that stays with you long after the night is over.

Sunset magic and a truly distinctive aesthetic

One of the things that makes Thermaikos stand out, of course, is its extraordinary view. From the outdoor tables, guests can take in the Thermaic Gulf, while on clear days Mount Olympus rises majestically on the horizon, creating a backdrop of remarkable natural beauty.

As the sun begins to set, the venue’s atmospheric lighting combines with its signature vintage mirrors to create a mesmerising play of reflections. Sunlight pours into the interior, transforming it into a colourful collage of light and shadow — a scene that is difficult to find anywhere else.

This distinctive aesthetic, together with the consistently high quality of its service and the unique energy of the space, creates an atmosphere that has remained remarkably timeless.

Events that keep the legend alive

Creativity has always been at the heart of the Thermaikos philosophy. Every year, from the beginning of October onwards, a vibrant programme of events brings fresh energy to Thessaloniki’s social scene.

The now-established “All About Sundays” has become a fixture in the city’s Sunday outings, attracting people week after week who share a love of music, good company and the unmistakable atmosphere of Thermaikos.

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, sunset parties also bring the venue to life in the late afternoon, as music meets the unique natural setting of Thessaloniki’s waterfront.

But Thermaikos’ activities extend well beyond its own four walls. Through its dedicated workshop, the team also provides bar and cocktail catering for events and collaborations both in Thessaloniki and further afield, bringing the venue’s distinctive aesthetic, quality and philosophy to every occasion.

From morning coffee to late-night energy

Open daily from 10am, Thermaikos naturally follows the rhythm of the day. It begins as a laid-back waterfront spot for coffee and sea views, moves seamlessly into relaxed afternoons and gradually transforms into a lively destination filled with music, creativity and energy.

Its sense of freedom, authentic character and more than three decades at the heart of Thessaloniki explain why it remains one of the city’s most loved and recognisable meeting points.

Thermaikos is far more than a café-bar. It is a living part of Thessaloniki’s modern history — a place that has shaped trends, championed music, hosted countless stories and continues to inspire with its authenticity and unmistakable personality.

With the Thermaic Gulf as its backdrop, distinctive aesthetics, quality drinks and an atmosphere that is almost impossible to put into words, Thermaikos remains one of the city’s most special destinations.

Because some places do not simply become part of history. They help create it.
